Wind Tower
This first layout of a typical floor for an apartment based on a type typical in mainland China has the open corridor and dual-aspect apartments typical of the type. All apartments have the advantages of natural light and ventilation to all rooms but the desire to give all apartments a southerly aspect means the number of apartments per floor is usually four but, fire escape distances permitting, two more narrow inner apartments can be added to bring the total to six.
The second image in the slideshow is the configuration mirrored to double the number of apartments. The next image is a configuration with the balconies repositioned to allow cross ventilation and more light across the central voids and through the outdoor areas of each apartment, as well as through the apartments themselves. The last image is an alternative way of achieving the same effects in locations where the direction of wind is less certain.
